Electric Fireplace Maintenance Tips

by Wyatt Fisk

The fireplace is consistently rated as one of the most preferred furnishings at home. Hence, such furnishing is contemplated as one of the highest investment returns of any furnishing additions inside a home. However, as a traditional wood burning fireplace could truly be hard to maintain, most homeowners nowadays prefer to use an electric fireplace because it is the most cost-effective alternative for natural gas or wood burning fireplace. Although the maintenance of an electric powered fireplace is not that labor extensive compared to its wood and gas burning counterparts, it is still necessary to regularly attend to its maintenance needs in order for it to last long.

An electric fireplace doesn't need a chimney ventilation to control the levels of its fire, as it does not produce real fire but a simulated one. A homeowner need not to regularly clean up soot or ashes, because an electric powered fireplace does not emit any of those particles. In addition, it does not use any logs to power it up, which makes it more preferable for home use. With an electric powered fireplace a homeowner spends lesser cleaning time.

To properly maintain your electric fireplace make sure that its wires and other electric components are in good condition. If the wires of your fireplace are frayed or damaged, replace it before use. When the ember bed of your fireplace is dark on one side, chances are its bulbs are already burned out so replace it with new ones. As for the heater system of your fireplace, consult with a fireplace heating and cooling system professional to extend the heating and cooling capabilities of your electric powered fireplace.

If you have a fireplace that has a glass enclosure or surrounds, the only cleaning agents that you must use are commercial glass cleaner and a lint-free cloth. Make sure that you already turned your unit off for several hours prior to cleaning in order to ensure safety. If you don't have any glass cleaner inside your home, you can use vinegar which is a more greener alternative. On the other hand, if your fireplace has wood elements on it, such as wood fireplace surrounds, make use of an oil soap that could make the wood shiny.

It is also important to give emphasis on your fireplace mantel shelf because aside from the fireplace pit itself, the mantel shelf is the next part that is often used, as it is where photographs and other decorative stuff are placed. Because wood is the most common material for a mantel shelf, it requires regular cleaning as it often catches dirt and other dust particles. To remove the dust from the surface of your mantle shelf and to prevent dirt from building up, use a vacuum with a dusting brush attachment when you clean it. But, if you don't have a vacuum cleaner you can also use a soft clean cloth or soft paper towels to clean the surface of you mantle shelf.

In addition, try not to use your fireplace mantel shelf as the storage area of your other things as doing so could wear and tear it easily. Also use pads, mats or felts under the objects that you place on your mantle shelf to avoid damage, stains and spills. By simply following these simple maintenance tips you can maintain the functionality of your electric powered fireplace. With good maintenance you are lengthening the life of your fireplace.

An electric fireplace is easy to maintain unlike its wood burning counterpart. By regularly checking its wires, heating and cooling system as well as the bulbs of its ember bed, you can extend the life of your fireplace. Similarly, it is also important to give emphasis on the cleaning of your fireplace mantel shelf and wood fireplace surrounds so that you can also maintain its aesthetic appeal.
